Community
Education
LSNV case handlers - both attorneys and paralegals -
frequently perform outreach in the community to inform
disadvantaged people about legal aid. LSNV staff and
volunteers go to nursing homes, shelters, and community
fairs. Our attorneys station themselves in courtrooms in
order to help clients who appear without a lawyer.
Additionally, other non-profit organizations or government
agencies that serve low-income individuals refer clients to
LSNV.
LSNV develops and distributes publications on various legal
topics, presents preventive law lectures, provides training to
volunteers and lawyers, and supports local agencies and
community groups.
LSNV, through its subgroup The Law Center for Children
(TLC), provides educational materials for parents and human
services providers, regarding their children’s legal rights in
the areas of public benefits, education, adoptions,
guardianships, and other areas of the law. In addition, the
TLC staff provides workshops for parents about how they can
best advocate for their children in school and in the
community.
LSNV is committed to preventing legal problems before they
arise by providing community and legal education. If you are
having a community event in which LSNV could participate, if
you need speakers, or if you require any of LSNV’s community
education materials, please contact James Ferguson, at
(703) 778-6800. We are eager to help!
a
predictable schedule and a very limited time
commitment. To introduce the project and to provide
comprehensive training for attorneys, LSNV can schedule a free
viewing of a videotape of a recent CLE that includes a
presentation on the procedure and evidence in protective order
cases, tips and pointers from the bench, and a mock trial.
LSNV’s experienced staff will also provide ongoing mentoring
to any interested attorneys. A law degree is a powerful
tool with which you can help make our community safer.
Please join us in this effort. For more information,
please call (703) 246-4379.
